A formulation for infusion and injections for (par)enteral nutrition and care of patients which require intensive care or suffer metabolic stress contains: (a) at least one monosaccharide or a deriv., at least 5 wt.% of which is one of the following glycoses; D-galactose, L-frucose, D-mannose, D-glucosamine, N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetyl-mannosamine, D-lactose, D-lactulose or their mixts. provided that at least 50 mol.% of these glycoses is D-valactose; and opt. (b) essential amino acids; (c) supplementary proteins; (d) inorganic electrolytes; and (e) conventional additives for dilution, pH regulation, stabilisation, preservation etc. USE/ADVANTAGE - The formulation is used for the (par)enteral nutrition of intensive care patients or those suffering from metabolic stress. The high proportion of D-galactose leads to a more rapid and noticeable recovery of the patient than the previously used glucose-contg. solns. Typical uses for the formulation are after heavy operations, accidents, in chronic consuming diseases, liver disease, Alzheimer's disease, resorption disorders or in stress situations, e.g. in Diabetes mellitus sufferers in hypoglycaemic conditions. The addn. of galactose rapidly brings the haemoglobin-bound glucose value to the normal level.
