The collection chamber (11) accommodates a predetermined number of documents, and an electronic control (12) collects data concerning individual documents fed from the input aperture (10). The control also stops movement of a part of the transport device when the number of documents fed in from the input aperture reaches the predetermined quantity. It then starts a third part (23-26) of the transport device to feed out documents from the collection chamber to the individual storage spaces (21,22). The control stops the third part of the transport device when the collection chamber is empty, and restarts the first part again so that documents are brought in from the input aperture.
