A hydraulic turbine or pump in which water is supplied to a running seal when the runner is being driven in the unloaded and empty state is provided with a lip to deflect the water leaving the seal into a discharge duct and away from the principal faces of the runner so as to reduce resistance losses. In the case of a centrifugal pump having a runner 2 mounted on a horizontal or vertical shaft 1 which also carries a turbine and an electrical machine, water is supplied to seals 7, 10 through ducts 14, 16, respectively, when the pump is being driven in the empty state. Water leaving seal 7 is deflected by lips 20, 31 on the runner 2 into discharge ducts 22, 32, respectively, and a similar lip 21 deflects the water leaving seal 10 into a duct 23. Thus the sealing water does not flow to the clearances between the principal faces 18,19 of the runner and the adjacent stator parts 3,4 and resistance losses are reduced. Air is also supplied in the regions of the seals through ducts 26, 27, 34; ducts 26, 27 may lead to the clearances between the runner faces 18, 19 and the stator parts 3.4. All the air and water ducts are provided with control valves. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the deflecting lips are mounted on the stator and comprise rings (38, 42) of metal, rubber or plastic mounted in annular grooves (37, 41) in the parts 3, 4. The same construction is applicable to a turbine.</p> |
