Supported metal oxide catalysts (I) are produced by mixing metal salt solns. with a cellulose deriv. (II), impregnating the support with the mixt., and drying and calcining for a given time at elevated temp. The novelty is that the metal salts used are organic salts (III). More specifically, (III) are salts of Mn and/or Cu, pref. acetates. Pref. process comprises making an aq. soln. of Mn acetate and a soln. of Cu acetate in aq. ammonia, adding both solns. to (II) (which is pre-swollen in water), impregnating the support with this mixt., then drying and calcining. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process enables the prodn. of (I) without the formation of harmful waste gases, esp. nitrogen oxides (as produced in prior-art processes using metal nitrates). The prods. (I) have the same level of catalytic activity as the prior-art catalysts.
