[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises 2,2,3,3-tetrabromobutanediol-(1,4 and 2-hydroxy-3,3,4,4-tetrabromotetrahydrofuran and a general process for brominating butyne-(2)-diol-(1,4) to give a reaction product including at least one of 2,2,3,3 - tetrabromobutanediol - (1,4), 2,3 - dibromobutene - (2) - diol - (1,4), 2 - hydroxy - 3,3,4,4 - tetrabromotetrahydrofuran and mucobromic acid, by contacting the diol with bromine in an aqueous or aqueous mineral acid medium at - 40‹ to 140‹ C. The bromination may be effected using U.V. radiation or known halogenation catalysts. Suitable adjustment of the reaction conditions can direct the bromination to give only one or two of the above products. The bromination products may be used to impart a flame-resistant finish to plastics (see Division C3). Examples are provided.
