The chair according to the invention is made of a frame (2) that forms a support (3) for the seat part, legs (4), and a vertical member (5) which forms the support for the backrest. Suspended from this vertical member (5) is the backrest (1) which is hinged at its lower end or base (6) to the seat part (7). The seat part (7) consists of two seat planes (7A, 7B) hinged together, and the backward-tilting supporting plane (7B) is also hinged to the base (6) of the suspended backrest (1). The first supporting plane (7A), which is more or less horizontal, slides in a track (9) on the support (3) formed by the frame (2); it can be locked in the desired position by means of a fastening means (8).
