Use of pentosan:poly:sulphate and zinc - for inhibition of transformation of b-lymphocytes by Epstein-Barr viruses

Application of low mol.wt. polysaccharides (I), pref. pentosan polysulphate (Ia) of mol.wt. 4000-6000, to inhibit transformation of human or mammalian B-lymphocytes by Epstein-Barr virus in vitro at a concn. of 30-200 microg/ml in usual cell culture media is new. (Ia) can also prevent transformation in vivo when administered (as an infusion or other formulation) to maintain a serum level of 30-200 microg/ml. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used in human or veterinary medicine control diseases (such as infectious mononucleosis, Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, glomerulonephritis, nasopharyngeal carcinoma or AIDS), caused or promoted by EB virus. The treatment can be combined with admin. of zinc which (a) increases the effect of (I) and (b) restores the Zn level of the serum to its proper level (and thus restores cellular immune function). (I) are also effective against spuma viruses.
