By this means of isolation of (1->3)-β-D-glucan from waste liquors, after ergosterol production, a higher quality product is gained than with existing methods, with direct use of yeast and simultaneously accomplishing evaluation and liquidation of difficult waste from the production of ergosterol. Preparation of dissoluble or indissoluble (1->3)-β-D-glucan according to the invention is carried out from waste alkaline liquors after isolation of ergosterol from homogenised yeast cells, particularly of the genus Saccharomyces, whereas the solid shares of these waste liquors are processed by washing with water or dilute acids at 0 to 100 degrees C, preferably 75 degrees C (dissoluble glucan), the product can be subjected to the action of acetic acid at 100 to 15O degrees C in an autoclave and the acquired solution is desiccated or lyophilised after dialysis (soluble glucan). The acquired product can be used in human or veterinary medicine as a reticulo-endothelial stimulant and as a moderator of cellular and humoral immunity.
