Transmission device, particularly for a fire-fighting vehicle, comprising a wheeled chassis on which is mounted an internal combustion engine (1) driving at least some wheels through the use of a semi-automatic or automatic gearbox (2) with a torque converter on which are mounted the universal-joint transmissions for driving the wheels, the said gearbox (2) making use of a movement take-off plate (8) driving a hydrostatic device coupled to the centrifugal pump (22) of the fire-fighting equipment, characterised in that it includes a system giving rise to the increase in idling speed of the internal combustion engine (1) up to a pre-defined speed, the hydrostatic device including a variable-output pump (23, 26) which feeds a hydraulic motor (25), the said hydrostatic device having regulating means such that when the fire-fighting equipment is switched on, the regulation of the speed of advancement of the vehicle does not have an influence on the operation of the centrifugal pump (22), the torque converter being designed, by construction, such that at the pre-defined engine speed the torque absorbed by the said converter, with its output shaft immobilised, is less than the engine torque decreased by the maximum torque absorbed by the hydrostatic transmission. <IMAGE>
