The present invention relates to a method for the production of alpha -methylbenzylphenols or of mixtures of these alpha -methylbenzylphenols and unsubstituted phenols by reaction of phenols optionally substituted by C1- to C4-alkyl groups or of a phenol with styrene, the reaction of phenols optionally substituted by C1- to C4-alkyl groups or of a phenol with styrene being effected by addition of 0.01 to 100 mol % of a phosphorus chloride - relative to the phenol - at temperatures from 20 to 350 DEG C.
