The shaft seal (1) has a metallic housing (2) fixed in a bore, and at least one polymeric seal ring (3), spring-loaded if necessary. The seal ring presses radially against an axial surface of an angled sleeve (4) fixed to a corresponding shaft. Prior to assembly, the sleeve is integral with the seal housing. A fracture point (10) allows the two components to be separated following assembly. ADVANTAGE - No extra components are needed to protect the shaft seal before assembly.
