A motor vehicle door lock having a lock plate (1) carrying a swivel latch (2), a catch (3) and an actuating lever system (4), together with an associated lock holder (5) on a door post or a bodywork component, which drives the swivel latch (2) with overshoot and holds it in the locked position under the action of a resilient buffer (7) which eliminates the overshoot. A lever arm (8) on the catch (3) carries an additional catch guide face (9) which drives a catch guide (11) disposed in front of the face (10) of the lock holder (5) when the motor vehicle door is closed. The catch guide (11) is driven by the catch (3) from a disengaged position into an engaged position when the motor vehicle door lock completes its locking movement, thereby engaging on the face (10) of the lock holder (5).
