PURPOSE:To confirm the front end of an endoscope, from the outside of a human body without burning an observing section by providing such an arranging that an outside body observing mode is set by a changeover means so as to start a time setting means, and a control means release the outside body observing mode after a predetermined time set by the time setting means elapsing. CONSTITUTION:An insertion part 7 of an endoscope 2 is inserted in a human body cavity. If the forward end of the insertion part 7 is to be confirmed during insertion, an outside body observing switch 38 provided in a light source 3 is turned on, accordingly, a turn-on signal is delivered to a CPU 39. The CPU 39 delivers a signal to a control circuit 38 so as to set an diaphragm 49 to a suitable position. During this period, the volume of emitting light can be changed by manipulating a light volume adjusting switch 47. Further, the CPU 39 has a timer which counts the time elapsing from the time of turn-on of the outside human body observing switch 38, and accordingly, when a time during which occurrence of burning is possibly considered due to an increase in the volume of illumination light, such as, for example, 5sec, elapses, the delivery of a transillumination signal is automatically stopped, and a rotary filter 24 is inserted into a light path so as to restart the emission of pulse light, and further, the diaphragm 49 is set to a value before the transillumination.
