The idling control regulates the quantity of air fed to the engine, to adjust the idling revs so that the voltage obtained from the driven electrical generator, or supplied by the latter to the vehicle battery, remains constant. A monitoring device determines the overall energising period of the generator field winding for each engine crankshaft angle cycle, with a computer used to calculate the correction value for the quantity of air to be fed to the engine. Pref. a clock generator (51) is used to provide clock signals from indexing a counter (53) under control of a switching transistor (54) which is conductive when no energising current is fed through the field winding, the counter output fed to a microprocessor (55).
