A body of free-flowing solids, which during descent in a housing is to be treated by counter flowing rising gas, drops within a series of compartments (5, 6, 7, 8) sepd. by internal partitions (24, 25, 26) adjustable in height, producing a series wherein the level of solids above the open compartment ends (9, 10, 11, 12) progressively lowers. From the initial compartment (8) receiving fresh solids these overflow into the next compartment to a lesser depth, before similar overflow to the next compatment. A sensor (40) responsive to level in the final compartment acts through a controller (41) to maintain incoming supply. Material discharges from the compartment ends into a conveyor channel (13) vibrated magnetically in the horizontal and possible also vertical direction. Gas pressure and/or compartment extn. rates are adjusted to ensure uniform solids concn. in all the discharging streams. USE/ADVANTAGE - For drying, cooling, heating or chemical reaction. Subdivision of total solids flow ensures simultaneous uniform treatment of descending mass.
