In a process for the production of lysozyme, egg white is contacted with a weakly acidic ionexchange resin at a pH of 6 to 7 at a temperature below room temperature, the resin separated, contaminating proteins eluted therefrom with a salt solution having a concentration of not more than 0.2 M and a pH of not more than 7, and the lysozyme eluted with an aqueous solution of a salt and precipitated from the eluate by increasing the salt concentration therein. The preferred pH is 6.4 to 6.5. The resin used may be one containing carboxylic acid groups.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise lysozyme extracted from egg-white by means of an ion-exchange resin (see Division C3) mixed with solid or liquid carriers or diluents.
