A hermetically encapsulated electric compressor for a refrigeration unit has a vertical shaft (19) coupling the motor (12) to the spring (14) mounted compressor block (13). The shaft bearings (25, 26) are provided by hardened steel balls and/or rollers of normal design which are located in prepared surfaces machined in the shaft (19) and bearing housing (21) but are not built into a conventional cage. The balls/rollers (25, 26) are vertically located by circlips (not shown) or similar, and compression is effected by piston (17) in cylinder (15) coupled to shaft (19) by crank (32) and con. rod (18) with lubrication via pipe (33) and oil galleries (34, 35). -
