PURPOSE:To effect reductive absorption of halogen alone by adjusting to a specific pH range a mixed aq. soln. of the hydroxide and sulfite of alkali metals when it is used for the cleaning of a mixed gas of halogen and carbon dioxide. CONSTITUTION:A liq. contg. the sulfite of alkali metals and/or alkaline earth metals such as lithium and sodium and the hydroxide of alkali metals and/or alkaline earth metals in the molar ratio of not more than 2 to the aforesaid sulfite, is used as a cleaning liq. A mixed gas of fluorine, bromine or iodine and carbon dioxide is washed with this cleaning liq., while its pH is being adjusted within the range of 1.9-6.3, whereby the fluorine, bromine or iodine can be removed from the mixed gas. By a simple and efficient removal in this way of the fluorine, bromine, etc., from the mixed gas over a wide pH range, a harmless halide results. |
