PURPOSE: To generate steam effectively by providing a steam collecting/ transmitting unit additionally to a mechanical steam separator for the wet steam to be transferred into a wet steam plenum. CONSTITUTION: A mixture of steam and water ascends from the upper plenum 32 of a core through a stand pipe 48 and flows into a mechanical steam separator 50 where the separated water is discharged through a side outlet into a reactor system while the separated steam is fed into a wet steam plenum 38 thence passed through a steam dryer 44 and used for a predetermined purpose. On the other hand, steam in the plenum 32 is separated through free surface steam separation phenomenon and accumulated in the steam collecting chamber 64 of a steam collecting/transmitting unit and then transferred through a vent pipe 70 into the plenum 38 by the difference of static pressure. Since the mass flow of steam passing through the pipe 70 is significantly higher than that of steam passing through the separator 50, the volume flow rate load being applied to the separator 50 decreases to cause an inevitable total reverse pressure drop through the pipe 48 and the separator 50 thus generating steam effectively.
