In a smokable article having an aerosol generation zone, consisting of a burner element and a support for an aerosol precursor which coaxially surrounds the burner element, having flow ducts in the aerosol generation zone, and having a mouthpiece, the burner element has axial flow ducts which extend over its entire length and a shell consisting of a thermally insulating material which is impervious to gas. The shell is surrounded at a distance by a concentric sleeve, consisting of a material which is impermeable to gas, so that at least one flow space is formed between the shell and the sleeve. The aspirated air flows through the flow ducts in the burner element, then back through the flow space between the shell and the sleeve and finally through the support for the aerosol precursor to the mouthpiece.
