A single acting or double acting deep drawing press has a mechanically operated ram and can operate in two different modes by changing the press tools. The sheet metal blank (5) is held in place against the undersurface of the upper press tool (6) by means of a workpiece holder (4). This holder (4) is pressed against the underside of the workpiece by means of four sliding rods (8) which act on the corners of the holder. These rods (8) are in turn actuated by hydraulic pistons (15) and the pressure exerted on the rods (8) can be varied to suit the nature of the deep drawing operation. USE - Deep drawing presses.
