PRODUCTION OF GLYCEROL MONO-FATTY ACID ESTER

PURPOSE:To obtain a compound which is useful as a cosmetic component in high quality with impurities reduced and stability increased by effecting the reaction between fatty acid and glycidol in the presence of a weak alkali catalyst. CONSTITUTION:One mole of a branched fatty acid of 8 to 24 carbon atoms such as isostearic acid and 0.9 to 1.1 mole of glycidol are used to effect reaction in the presence of a catalyst of a carbonate salt or a mixture thereof with a bicarbonate salt at 70 to 150 deg.C under atmospheric pressure or an elevated pressure for 1 to 100 hours to give the subject compound. The mixing ratio of the carbonate and the bicarbonate is 100:(1 to 30) in the catalyst. The catalyst is added by 0.001 to 0.1 mole per 1 mole of the fatty acid, preferably the operation is conducted in nitrogen gas sealing for prevention of coloration or odorization.
