PURPOSE:To improve the various properties of an alkaline storage battery by using a hydrogen storage alloy having a specific composition composed principally of rare earth elements including specific amounts of La as a cathode material for a hermetically sealed-type alkaline storage battery. CONSTITUTION:As a cathode material for a hermetically sealed-type alkaline storage battery, a hydrogen storage alloy having a composition represented by a compositional formula ANiaCobMnc or ANiaCobMncXd is used. In the above compositional formula, A means rare earth elements including 20-50wt.% La, X means at least one element selected from the group consisting of Fe, Cu, Mo, W, B, Al, Si, and Sn, the simbols (a), (b), (c), and (d) stand for 2.5-3.5, 0.4-1.5, 0.2-1.0, and 0-0.3, respectively, and a+b+c or a+b+c+d is 3.85-4.78. By using this hydrogen storage alloy as a cathode material, the discharge capasitance of the alkali battery can be increased and cycle characteristics can be improved. |
