The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a new silicon-containing polymer comprising chains derived from a polybutene. In a first stage, a new intermediate product is prepared by an addition reaction between (i) a liquid polybutene containing per molecule one carbon-carbon double bond, 1 to 90% being of the vinylidene type, and (ii) a silicon-containing thiol having at least one hydrolysable radical. In a second stage, polycondensation of the hydrolysed intermediate product and/or polycondensation of the intermediate product with an organic compound containing at least two labile hydrogen is carried out. The new silicon-containing polymer may be used in water/gastight products, mastics or materials for filling cables.
