PURPOSE:To obtain the subject resin having excellent heat stability with improving deterioration in melt processing and increasing of viscosity without inducing problem about plasticizing by heating specific polyphenylene ether-based polymer together with specific compound and in a state of adding no radical initiator. CONSTITUTION:A polyphenylene ether-based polymer having terminal group expressed by formula I [R1 to R5 are H, (substituted) alkyl, halogen or (substituted) aryl; R10 and R11 are H or (substituted) alkyl omitting a case of simultaneous H of the both] is heated to a temperature higher than glass transition temperature of polyphenylene ether together with a compound having C-C double bond and expressed by formula II [R6 to R9 are H, (substituted) alkyl, (substituted) alkenyl, halogen, (substituted) aryl, alkoxy or N-lactam, etc.] in a state of adding no radical initiator to afford the aimed resin having >=0.01, in an average, cyclic terminal group expressed by formula III to 100 phenylene ether unit comprising the resin and 1000-100000 number-average molecular weight..
