A process for synthesising 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) fluorene by the conversion of fluorenone with an excess of phenol with the aid of a fluid catalyst, for the production of which aluminium trichloride is dissolved in a non-aqueous organic solvent like toluol, having the property of an electron donor, with the introduction of gaseous hydrogen chloride. For the purposes of synthesis, the fluorenone is dissolved, for example at 60 DEG C, in the fluid phenol, whereafter the fluid catalyst is introduced in drops into the reaction mixture under agitation, using such a device that the temperature of the reaction mixture is kept below 60 DEG C. After the catalyst has been added and following a post-reaction period of several hours, hot water is added to the raw product and the superfluous phenol is removed by water vapour distillation. After one wash in hot water the raw product is dissolved in hot acetone, allowed to crystallise out, filtered and dried in the vacuum furnace. Finally the raw product is recrystallised from 1,2 dichloroethane to form the pure product. |
