A detergent for contact lenses and a method for washing contact lenses using same are disclosed. The detergent comprises 40 to 80 wt % of fine particles of a water-soluble compound which has a salt value up to 0.65 and a solubility in water of 3 to 30 at 30 DEG C and up to 40 at 60 DEG C, with the product thereof being up to 10, and 100 % of which passes a JIS standard sieve of a nominal size of 75 mu m and 60 to 20 wt % of a pasting agent containing as a major component an aqueous dispersion of a gel composed of a polyhydric alcohol and an acrylic compound having repeating units represented by general formula (I) (wherein R1 represents hydrogen and/or methyl, R2 represents at least one member selected from among hydrogen, sodium, potassium, lithium, NH4, a residue of saturated polyhydric alcohol bearing 2 to 4 carbon atoms and alkyl bearing 1 to 32 carbon atoms) and having crosslinking sites in said repeating units.
