Spikes on pneumatic tyres for motor vehicles are forbidden in some countries but. have been proved to be indispensible in Scandinavian countries. A massive spike (10) comprises rivet (11), the flange (12) and the point (13). The surface layer of the point is made of a harder material e.g. cemented carbide (14) pref. so its wear rate equals that of the surrounding tyre rubber other opt. materials are e.g. ceramics or fibre materials. ADVANTAGE - Less expensive than solid cemented carbide and can be designed to match the abrasion of the tyre tread.
