PURPOSE:To improve strength and elastic modulus of carbon-carbon composite material by extruding a mixture of a specific filler and a matrix from an extruder. CONSTITUTION:Petroleum-based pitch prepared as a by-product by thermal catalytic cracking of desulfurized vacuum gas oil is distilled under reduced pressure and 85% distillate is cut to give a fraction, to which a nonoxidizing gas is introduced and which is heat-treated at 380-420 deg.C to give pitch containing mesophase pitch. The pitch is aged at 280-320 deg.C for many hours, separated into a nonmesopitch of upper layer and a mesophase pitch of lower layer. The nonmesopitch is treated by the same method as that mentioned above and separated into nonmesopitch of upper layer and 100% mesophase pitch for melt spinning of lower layer. Then the mesophase pitch is subjected to melt spinning to give pitch-based filament, which is infusibilized with air, calcined and carbonized in an inert gas and graphitized in an Ar gas at 2,400-2,700 deg.C to give carbon fiber having high strength, high modulus of elasticity and 1.90-2.13 density. Then the fiber is impregnated with nonmesopitch of the table and cut to give a filler. Then the filler 1 and 0.2-8 times as much a matrix such as honey as the filler are fed to a twin screw extruder and extruded. |
