PURPOSE:To prepare an optically active 2-substituted carboxylic acid by bringing the racemic body of a 2-substituted nitrile of a specific general formula into contact with a microorganism having an ability to convert the 2-substituted nitride into the optically active 2-substituted carboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:The racemic body of a 2-substituted nitrile of formula I [R is CnH2n+1 (n>=1), CnH2n-1 (n>=2), CmH2mY (m>=1, Y is hydroxyl, sulfhydryl, amino acid or halogen), etc.; X is methyl, ethyl or halogen] is brought into contact with a microorganism having an ability to convert the racemic body into an optically active 2-substituted carboxylic acid of formula II to prepare the compound of formula II.
