PURPOSE:To uniformly treat fibers in respective stages even if low-voltatile materials are generated and to continuously and inexpensively obtain the homogeneous pitch based activated carbon fibers by subjecting pitch to melt spinning to form a sheet-shaped fiber assembly consisting of the continuous fibers and then making the assembly infusible and activating the same. CONSTITUTION:The molten pitch 1 is supplied to a spinning device A and is discharged from a mouthpiece 4 of a mouthpiece pack 3; thereafter, the spun pitch is cooled with the gas supplied from a gas supplying pipe 5 to form the continuous fiber yarn. The fiber yarn is opened by an opening and traversing device 7 to form the sheet-shaped fiber assembly Sp. This sheet-shaped fiber assembly Sp is transported by transporting bodies 8, 9 to an infusible device B where the assembly is subjected to a hot wind treatment in the state of isolating the same from the external atmosphere and is thereby made infusible. The resulted infusible sheet Si is introduced into an activating device C and is activated by the activating gas supplied from an activating gas supply pipe 12, by which the activated sheet-shaped carbon fibers Sa are obtd.
