Method and arrangement for detecting electrostatic or electrokinetic charges on solids which are non-conductive, and in gases which are charged or ionised by measuring the original charge distribution in accordance with separate polarity and intensity, in which process not only charge points but also area or spatial distributions are detected with a derivation of the speed of a moving charged solid, for example by correlation measurement and extensive shielding against external phenomena such as foreign charges or temperature and air humidity, and with a discrete and also analog signal output. Fields of application of the method according to the invention are the detection of electrostatic charges in general industry, particularly in the processing of textiles and plastics, and in thread monitors on sewing, embroidering, stitching and tufting machines, where this is coupled, in particular, with the speed of the sewing machine, the movement of the under-thread spool, the stitch length and presence of sewing material and measurement of the sewing material thickness. <IMAGE>
