Can opener comprising an electric motor whose output gear 2 engages with a set of gears 3 which drives a shaft 4 carrying a small wheel 6 intended to come into contact with the crimping bead (flange) of a can, as well as a cutting roller 11 intended to cut the said bead (flange) laterally, the shaft 4 being mounted both rotatably and so as to move axially by means of a two-directional drive mechanism 14, the direction of rotation of which is controlled by an invertor 15. According to the invention, the invertor 15 comprises a sliding gear wheel (clutch) 16 mounted so as to move on a spindle 17 and including two coaxial wheels 19 and 20 which are toothed on their side 21 and 22 and arranged on either side of the output gear 2 as well as a lever 23 intended to displace the sliding gear wheel (clutch) 16. The invention applies to can openers for domestic use. <IMAGE>
