In the production of sour dough by communiting stale bread and mixing with water, provision is made for cutting up and communiting the state bread in the water. For this purpose, the invention provides a container with a central upright which comprises a stationary upright spindle and a rotatable cutting shaft located over this. The stationary upright spindle and the cutting shaft bear in each case radially horizontally running knife carriers on which vertically running cutting knives are fastened. The cutting knives of the lower knife carrier of the stationary upright spindle extend vertically upwards, whereas the cutting knives of the upper knife carrier run vertically downwards and can engage in a comb-like manner into the gaps between the knives of the lower knife carrier. This structure makes it possible to design the container inner wall itself to be completely smooth and free of supports.
