<p>A mammalian cell line having an inheritable genetic element comprising a TNF, IL-1α or IL-1β promoter and, under transcriptional control thereof, a coding region, wherein the promoter controls transcription of the coding region in response to the exposure of the said cell line to a pyrogen and the said coding region encodes a reporter polypeptide. The cell line is used as the basis of an assay. The promoter is preferably the human interleukin-1α or -1β promoter, the cell line is preferably human monocyte derived, and the reporter polypeptide may be β-galactosidase, α-galactosidase, chloramphenicol acetyl transferase, luciferase or phosphatase.</p> |
