PURPOSE:To increase capacity by arranging a highly water-absorbing resin or a gelled electrolyte between positive and negative active materials and by forming an electrolyte retaining layer over the whole upper part of them. CONSTITUTION:A gelled electrolyte 9 is arranged between a positive electrode 1 and a negative electrode 2. A positive current collector 4 and a negative current collector 7 are arranged in the lower part of each of a positive active material 3 and a negative active material 6. A nonwoven fabric mainly comprising inorganic fibers or organic fibers is arranged as an electrolyte retaining layer 5 over the whole upper part of the active materials 3, 6 and the electrolyte 9, then the whole of them is sealed with an airtight resin film 8. When a battery is discharged, discharge reaction continues through the layer 5, and when the battery is charged, gas absorbing reaction proceeds through the electrolyte 9. The amount of electrolyte required for reaction between the electrodes 1 and 2 is always retained and capacity is increased. |
