The guide system includes a pair of identically configured guide device (5,6) engaging the electrode wire just above and just below the workpiece (3). Each of the two guides comprises a boxlike frame (7) with apertures in top and bottom limbs through which the electrode wire pass. Inside the frame are three ringline guides (8,9,10) arranged in a vertical stack and individually biased towards the frame by respective tension springs circumferentially displaced by 120 degrees relative to each other. The frames (7) are attached to the body of the discharge machining apparatus in a manner permitting movement of the frame relative to the workpiece, under servo control.
