To clean the sieve mesh periodically during the operation of the screening machine the tension of the sieve mesh is temporarily increased above the tension required for sifting. Any material blocking the screen holes is freed through the different vibration. When the screen tension is increased the frequency and/or amplitude of the exciter unit can also be varied, in particular increased. The screen mesh can have tension folds at the narrow sides which can be engaged by tension hooks on the machine frame. One hook can be rigidly mounted and the other movable so that it can be adjusted by a setting member to alter the tension. ADVANTAGE - The cleaning action is produced without damaging the screen mesh.
