The safety locking mechanism for a lift or similar machine comprises a rotary drum (1) which is attached to the pinion of the rack and pinion drive mechanism and mounted on a plate. A roller (8) on the end of a lever (6) pivoted to the plate is held against the surface of the drum, which is equipped with cams (2,3) projecting from its surface. If the drum speed exceeds a set level the roller and lever are pushed away from the drum's surface, and a claw (6') connected to the lever engages with a projection (4,5) on the drum, locking the drum and pinion, so that the lift comes to a stop.
