IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO PILE PROTECTION SYSTEMS

Steel piling (1) for quays and other waterside structures has an anti-corrosion cladding fitted. Flexible or rigid water-impermeable sheets (4, 17) are used to trap a gel loaded with anti-corrosion agents against the piling and to exclude all water. With flexible sheets (4), rigid bars (6) are overlaid and positioned so that the sheets follow the contours of the piling. Fastening is preferably by threaded studs (8), which may be fired through the sheet material to grip the piling, and nuts (9). The piling contours can be smoothed out by using filler pieces (15) in the channels. The gel may be impregnated in a felt inner layer (13) of the sheet material, and further gel pumped in to expel vestigial water. Alternatively, the trapped water may be mixed with a super-absorbent to form the gel.
