An electric fence apparatus having a pulse generator which operates in accordance with the capacitor discharge principle and contains devices (rectifier arrangement G) for energy recovery during low-loss operation of the electric fence 11, failure phenomena can occur in that the dry ground 14 forms a considerable non-reactive bias resistance RB to the non-reactive body resistance RT of the animal and, in consequence, allows only a fraction of the peak voltage of the pulse to be effective on the animal's body, like a voltage divider. In order to avoid such failure phenomena in dry weather and ground conditions, a rectifier arrangement for energy recovery is used which is of such a type that it can be switched into two different operating modes, specifically into one operating mode for energy recovery and a mode, which is switched off in both flow directions, for the pulse energy to have its complete effect on the electric fence, without any energy recovery. For this purpose, the rectifier arrangement G has added to it a mode control device which is optionally controlled manually or automatically, switches to energy recovery for n pulses, for example 3 to 5, applied to the electric fence and then to the mode which is switched off in both flow directions for 1 or 2 pulses applied to the electric fence 11.
