PURPOSE:To obviate a contact member and the like used for electrically transmitting information by a method wherein, in the process of travelling a recording head from a scanning range for recording to a predetermined stop position, contained data intrinsic to the recording head is read by a detection means used for detecting the stop position. CONSTITUTION:After a normal initialization is conducted, a recording head 4 is moved to a home position where a home position detection board 3a is detected by a photo-interrupter 5 and brought to a stop. After that, when the recording head 4 is to be rank-identified, the recording head 4 is once shifted from the home position by moving a carrier 3, and the carrier is again moved toward the home position. Then, from the time when the position detection board 3a is detected, the carrier 3 is moved toward the home position by the predetermined number of pulses.
