6-Beta(substd.)-S-hydroxymethyl penicillanic acids of formula (I) and salts are new. In (I), R1 is a heterocyclic gp.; R is H, benzyl, or the residue of certain carboxy protecting gps. of the residue of an ester gp. readily hydrolyzable in vivo. (I) are potent antibacterial agents having beta-lactamase inhibitory activity, useful as industrial antimicrobials.
