In order to improve the operation of mechanisms used in a vacuum, in particular on artificial satellites, space missiles and spacecrafts, the surface of one of the mechanical parts coming into contact is coated successively with an intermediate layer of an antigalling material and with an external layer of a solid lubricant. When the latter is damaged, the friction coefficient increases slightly but without any danger of sticking. When the opposite part is made of a ferrous alloy, the antigalling material is silver and the solid lubricant MoS2. An underlayer of gold or nickel helps bonding the silver when the part with this coating is itself made of a ferrous alloy. This arrangement is also used between metallic supports and metallic interface joints of the type generally used for supporting fragile elements, such as mirrors and lenses, in a vacuum.
