PURPOSE:To obtain a photoelectric conversion element which is flexible, high in conversion efficiency, large in area, and can be easily manufactured at a low cost by a method wherein the photoelectric conversion element is provided with a light transmissive front electrode, an active layer, and a back electrode, where the active layer is formed of an azopigment and an acceptor compound. CONSTITUTION:An azopigment used for an optically active layer is selected from compounds represented by formulas (1)-(3). Here, X1, X2, and X3 denote a diazonium residue, A, A', and A'' represent coupler residues, and A, A', and A'' may be the same or different from each other. A compound, whose electron affinity is larger than 0.6eV or reduction potential is larger than -1.0V to a saturated calomel electrode, is used as an acceptor compound added to the optically active layer. A photoelectric conversion element is composed of an optically active layer 2, a front electrode 1, and a back electrode 4, where the active layer 2 is sandwiched between the electrodes 1 and 4. The acceptor compound concerned has a chemical structure provided with an electron attractive substituent such as halogen, a nitro group, a cyano group, a carbonyl group, or the like.
