The present invention relates to a hydraulic shock absorber intended to equip a suspension member. The shock absorber according to the invention comprises a tubular body 1 forming a cylinder containing a working fluid and in which are defined two primary chambers, respectively a compression chamber 20 and an expansion chamber 21, a movable piston 6 capable of moving in translation inside the cylinder 1 during the deflection of the suspension member in order to stress the working fluid, the chambers 20, 21 being capable of communicating hydraulically with each other through the use of a means 30 for throttling the working fluid, provided in a shock-absorbing unit 31 which is mechanically independent of the cylinder 1 and connected to each of the two primary chambers 20, 21 by respective connection pipes 34, characterised in that the shock-absorbing unit 31 is provided with a cooling means 35 acting in particular on the throttling means 30. This shock absorber applies to a motor vehicle of the all-terrain type and/or of a sporty nature. <IMAGE>
