A compsn. comprises a poly (electrolyte) self-crosslinking copolymer copolymerised from (a) a carboxylic polyelectrolyte monomer, (b) a reactive self-crosslinking monomer of formula CH2 =C(R)-(CH2)n-C(O)- X, and (c) a hydrophobic monomer. R = H or Me; n = 0-5; X =a gp. capable of reacting through self condensation or with carboxylic acid by condensation or ring opening. The obtd. compsn is for forming absorbent articles (claimed), esp. for absorbing body fluids. Absorbent powders and films are claimed. A dispersion of the absorbent material may be applied to a substrate, e.g. a fibrous web or cellular polymer, and dried to produce cross-linked poly (electrolyte) in situ (claimed).
