An ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus of the present invention which makes resolution uniform in a direction orthogonal to the direction of scanning with sonic rays over a wide range from a shallow portion to a deep portion is characterized in that a plurality of unidimensional arrays of a plurality of ultrasonic oscillators are arranged in parallel and acoustic lenses having array-specific focal lengths are disposed on the ultrasonic wave radiation surface sides of these arrays to constitute an ultrasonic probe. The combination of the arrays participating in the transmission and/or reception of ultrasonic waves is switched in accordance with the depth of an object of observation in performing transmission and reception of the ultrasonic signals.
