PURPOSE:To provide the title copolymer with a relatively high MW and usable as a water-absorbing polymer compsn., etc., by copolymerizing a specified alkenyl ether and maleic anhydride as essential components at a specified molar ratio. CONSTITUTION:An alkneyl ether of formula I (wherein B is a residue of a compd. having 3-8 OH groups; AO is a 2-18C oxyalkylene; R<1> is a 4-5C alkenyl; R<2> is a 1-24C hydrocarbon group or acyl; a is 1-7; b is 0-6; a+b is 2-7; l, m and n are each 0-1,000 and l+am+bn>=1) (e.g. formula II), maleic anhydride and, if necessary, another monomer (e.g. acrylic acid) are copolymerized at a molar ratio of 5-60:40-70:0-40 to prepare the title copolymer. A copolymer with a desired form such as liq., gel, solid, etc., can be obtd. by selecting the compd. of formula I, the polymn. condition, etc. |
