The subject of the present invention is a model-fabricating process and a device for automatically cutting elements for this fabrication. A computer (1) receives all the coded data according to an international standard for the geometrical description of the volumes and surfaces of a design for which the model is to be made. The said computer controls a machine tool (15), the milling head (16) of which carries interchangeable tools (28), such that it cuts elements corresponding to the desired scale for the said surfaces from plates (22) of different thickness and of diverse materials. Each element is referenced on an assembly diagram (21) and the cutting is controlled by way of displacement sensors integrally connected to the motors (23) for moving the said head translationally along at least three axes. <IMAGE>
